The Voice of Concrete in pre and post-independent India
Sanjitha Suresh
“Concrete says: Up until now, I was being introverted and now I’m suddenly out in the world in the form of an aesthetic expression, which was something new to me and maybe that’s why I found it hard to act the way they wanted me to. There were a lot of complaints about me that were passed on between these people who worked with me and how I wasn’t obeying them. The columns and beams I was poured onto were not up to their standards. There was a need for better workmanship to handle my tantrums and accept me for who I really am.”
This research aims to understand the material 'concrete' in the Indian context, not only for its modernism but by going beyond it to look at its dual nature through the pre and post-independence lens.
