Exploring the techno-material history of the Old Bombay-Poona Road in the 20th Century
Richa Shah

“While the 19th century focuses more on materials like asphalt and macadam, the 20th century highlights the use of cement concrete as an important material for road making, with the others still in use for minor works.”
The study focuses on the 20th century which is divided into two phases - the pre-independence period (1900-1947) which focuses on the phase of experimentation and commercializing cement concrete against the previously used materials for road making. Second is the post-independence period (1947-1970) where the road infrastructure was completely governed by the spirit of nationalism ignited in the newly independent nation - India.
