Relations between contractors and the Public Works Department in late 19th- and early 20th-Century Pune
Ashmita Gupta

“Contractors are shown as less intellectual throughout the document. They are portrayed as constantly disputing and as con men. The fact that the PWD endorsed this book and that it was printed in the government press suggests that such views were common within the PWD.”
This study examines the relations between contractors and the Public Works Department on construction sites. It offers insights into everyday work practices and exchanges between Indian contractors and European engineers of the PWD in Poona during 1890–1910. This study aims to establish whether interactions with
contractors on construction sites of buildings are different from those on major infrastructure projects.
